SKILLS SESSIONS

  1. Footwork – Players will learn proper footwork techniques such as stance, jump stop, stride stops, pivots, change of direction, triple threat positioning, and playing the game without the ball, etc.

  2. Ball Handling – Players will demonstrate stationary ball handling skills, stationary dribbling, ball handling on the move, 2 ball dribbling, NBA combine moves, etc. They will learn different types of dribbling such as speed, control, crossover, reverse, on side, change of pace, inside out, behind the back, and between the legs dribble.

  3. Shooting – Players will learn the basic fundamentals of the shot and how to shoot the ball correctly (BEEF Method, 4 points of the shot, the vowels (AEIOU) of the shot), Lay ups, mid-range jumpers, shots off the catch, shots off the bounce, shots on the move, etc. Each player will receive a video evaluation of their shot and shooting workouts to improve their individual shot.

  4. Passing and Rebounding – Players will learn and perform various passing and rebounding skills with specific passing and rebounding drills taught. Players will master passing and understand when, where, what, why, and how each pass is used during game competition. The chest pass, bounce pass, over the head pass, one handed push pass, baseball pass, lob pass, post entry pass, and fast break passing will be emphasized. Basic offensive and defensive rebounding skills will be attained. Principles include balance, timing, aggressiveness, effort, positioning, blocking out, and pursuit of ball.

  5. Offensive and Defensive Concepts – Players will be taught individual and team offensive and defensive concepts. For example, on offense players will learn to play the game without the ball to help their teammates and team. On defense players will learn basic positioning and strategies to help their team.

  6. 1 on 1 – Players will learn and perform 1 on 1 moves. They will also understand how, when, why, and where to use those moves. These moves will be taught out of stationary and on the move positions. Onside moves, crossover moves, rocker step moves, hop back moves, and NBA moves will be developed by each player.

  7. Point Guard play – Players will develop the skills of a point guard and understand that it is a challenging process both mentally and physically. Some of these skills include understanding their teammates, earning trust from teammates and coaches, setting the tone in practice, understanding situations, being unselfish, being a defensive leader, know time and score at all times, and controlling the tempo of the game. Point guard fundamentals will be performed out of these concepts.

  8. Post Play – Players will learn different post moves and shots with an understanding of why and when these moves and shots occur. Some of the moves performed will include the drop step, face up, face up and step through, cross over, post hesitation, ball fake, and flash pivot moves. Players will also learn and perform different types of post shots.
